Moriches Elementary celebrates student readers with awards

Moriches Elementary School recently held an event to recognize students in grades K-5 who participated in the voluntary summer reading program. High school student found with handgun; investigation ongoing

This afternoon, shortly before high school dismissal, a student was brought to an administrator's office for possible vaping. During a search with a metal detecting wand, it was discovered that the student had a handgun. The weapon was confiscated and police were notified immediately.

William Floyd High School girls' tennis advances to playoffs for 22nd straight year

The William Floyd High School girls' varsity tennis team has concluded a successful season, securing their place in the playoffs for the 22nd consecutive year. Under the guidance of head coach David Pia, the Colonials achieved a 10-2 record in League IV and a 14-2 overall standing. Their performance has earned them a No. 4 seed, granting them a first-round bye and setting up a second-round home playoff match on October 22 against either No. 13 Sachem or No. 20 Eastport-South Manor.

Her journey in education began when she moved with her family from Ozone Park, Queens, to Brentwood in 1959. As a student in the Brentwood School District, she was inspired by her teachers who recognized and nurtured her talents in music, language, and writing.

Sue Hersh posthumously awarded outstanding educator by alumni association

Sue Hersh, a former art teacher at William Floyd High School, has been honored posthumously as the 2024 William Floyd Alumni Association Outstanding Educator. Born in 1948 in Miller Place, New York, Hersh pursued her education at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia and later earned a master's degree in social work from Stony Brook University.
