Brian Heinz has been named the 2024 William Floyd Alumni Association Outstanding Educator. Heinz is a well-known author of 20 children's books, which span both fiction and non-fiction genres. His works are known for their reflection of the natural world, often researched on location.

Heinz's teaching career includes language arts and science at John S. Hobart Elementary School and Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School. He has also taught writing for children at Hofstra University's Summer Writers Conference for a decade. Additionally, he presents programs at schools and professional conferences across the country.

Heinz's books have received numerous awards and starred reviews from publishers such as Doubleday, Creative Editions, Dial, Millbrook, North Country Books, 4RV Publishing, and Chronicle.

Reflecting on his time at William Floyd, Heinz said: “During my years at William Floyd, I was fortunate to have worked with intelligent, energetic, and dedicated educators who taught with passion and empathy; and, to have shared in the lives of wonderful families. I can only hope my students learned as much from me as I have learned from them. They are with me, always.”

Heinz divides his time between eastern Long Island and New York’s Adirondack Mountains.
