The year was 1934 when a small group of firefighters from the Patchogue Fire Department decided to start a separate ambulance company. The decision to form this ambulance service was solidified following a massive accident at an industrial mill.

Some Advice for the Graduates
It was 46 years ago that l graduated from Center Moriches High School, Class of 1978, and it seems like yesterday that my life was just beginning. The Democrats spend a great deal of time talking about "threats to our democracy". January 6, Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are a few of the most common "threats" cited. At the South Shore Press we have consistently tried to frame that narrative through its proper lens. Our "democracy" is nothing more than the people's ability to choose their elected leaders and replace them when they fail to enact the will of those same people. As long as that process exists, and the elections are fair and honest, our "democracy" is intact. Period.

SCPD Detective Honored for Courageous Comeback
Detective Guerrero, a member of the department since 2010, conducted a traffic stop of a stolen vehicle on September 22, 2014. As then-Officer Guerrero and another officer approached the vehicle, the driver fled, striking Officer Guerrero, who was left unconscious in the roadway.

A Memory of My Dad
My dad, Michael A. Chartuk, followed in his older brother's footsteps and joined the Coast Guard in 1939. His first duty was patrolling New York Harbor and he said he was popular with the crew because he was the only one onboard who knew how to cook. He was sent to radio school and when World War ll broke out, he was dispatched to Hispaniola, an island in the Caribbean, to set up a radio station to intercept enemy messages.
