The Port Jefferson Varsity Boys Track Team has a new title to celebrate, as its 4x800-meter relay squad can now officially call itself state champions.
After a strong and consistent season, the relay team of Lucas Sweeney, Sean Grossman, Christopher Nam and Sviatsoslav Zalizniak delivered when it mattered most, capturing the state title in impressive fashion. The quartet showcased determination, teamwork and endurance, capping off a season that had already hinted at something special.
Guided by coaches Andrew Cosci and Dannie Holland Jr., the team steadily built momentum throughout the year. Their hard work paid off in a big way at the state finals, where they rose to the occasion against top competition from across New York.
The championship performance adds to what has already been a remarkable season for Port Jefferson. Earlier this year, the team made headlines by breaking the school’s 4x800 relay record at the Millrose Trials, posting an impressive time of 8:07.15. That milestone performance served as a preview of what was to come and demonstrated the group’s potential on a larger stage.
From the early meets to the final race of the season, the Royals showed consistency and resilience, improving with each outing. Their state title not only highlights their talent but also reflects the dedication of the athletes and coaching staff behind the scenes.
With this achievement, the Port Jefferson relay team has etched its name into the program’s history, giving the school community plenty to celebrate and setting a high standard for future teams to follow.
