Suffolk County law enforcement agencies are ramping up efforts to recruit and retain more women, with both the Sheriff’s Office and Police Department highlighting initiatives aimed at building a more representative workforce.

Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. announced continued progress in the department’s participation in the national 30x30 Initiative, which seeks to increase the percentage of women in policing to 30% by 2030. Since joining the pledge in January 2024, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office has increased female representation among sworn personnel by 6%, bringing new momentum to a force that previously stood at 16% female officers.

The agency has also made strides in leadership, with female supervisory roles in the Corrections Division rising by nearly 29% and a 20% increase reported in the Police Division. Officials say those gains are the result of targeted outreach, mentorship programs and internal policy changes designed to support career advancement.

“The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is proud to continue our work with the 30x30 initiative,” Toulon said, noting efforts to both attract new recruits and provide resources for current officers to grow professionally.

The Sheriff’s Office has hosted informational sessions where female officers share their experiences and answer questions from prospective applicants. Quarterly meetings among female staff have also led to improvements, including updated parental leave resources and uniform adjustments.

Meanwhile, the Suffolk County Police Department is also focusing on recruitment through events like a recent Women of the SCPD panel at St. Joseph’s College. Female officers shared personal stories to encourage others to consider careers in law enforcement.

“If you don’t think you’ll fit the mold, figure out a path,” Officer Victoria Funez told attendees.

Department leaders emphasized that policing offers diverse opportunities and a supportive environment. Officials from both agencies say increasing female representation strengthens their ability to serve the community and reflects a broader commitment to inclusion in public safety careers.
