History was made twice on Saturday as American Soccer Club New York earned its first victory of the 2026 National Premier Soccer League season with a dominant 5-0 win over AC Newport at LaValle Stadium on the campus of Stony Brook University. The match marked the club’s first-ever game in Suffolk County and proved to be a memorable one.
The win was historic for multiple reasons. It was the first shutout in club history, as goalkeeper Aidan Ganun recorded the clean sheet, and it also set a new mark for most goals scored in a single game by the club.
ASC New York (1-0-1) bounced back in a big way after a 2-1 loss in its season opener to the New York Shockers on May 2, while AC Newport (0-1-0) dropped the first match in its franchise history.
“I think this was a culmination of the frustration from the way we lost the first game,” said head coach John Fitzgerald. “We took that frustration out tonight, but in a positive way. It still wasn’t a complete game by our standards, but overall it was very encouraging.”
Brian Saramago opened the scoring in the 11th minute, finishing a setup from Leo Pinto. In first-half stoppage time, captain Sean Fitzgerald added another goal to give the Fighting Tomcats a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The momentum continued in the second half as Aidan Kolbe extended the lead to 3-0 in the 58th minute. ASC New York controlled play throughout the full 90 minutes.
“It felt amazing,” said Saramago. “Playing in front of our home fans and getting a 5-0 win is a great feeling. We showed what we can do when we’re at our best.”
Defender Ezequiel Palomeque made it 4-0 with a highlight-reel free kick in the 88th minute before Chris Morandi capped the scoring in the 90th minute off a pass from 17-year-old Dylan Lopez, who recorded his first career NPSL point.
ASC New York returns to action on May 23 with a road matchup against AC Newport before hosting New Haven United FC on June 6 at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale.
