You might as well start calling it “Lax Island” with what Stony Brook Seawolves has accomplished this season. In a remarkable showing, the program captured both the men’s and women’s CAA lacrosse championships on the same day, cementing Stony Brook’s place as a true powerhouse in the sport.
For the women’s team, success has become the standard. This year was no exception, as they rolled past Towson Tigers, 18-7, at LaValle Stadium to secure their fourth straight CAA title and 12th conference championship overall. The win also marked their 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The dominance doesn’t stop there. The Seawolves have now gone a perfect 38-0 in conference and CAA Tournament play since joining the league and have won an incredible 99 straight games against conference opponents, a streak dating back to 2014.
Leading the way was Isabella Caporuscio, who scored six goals and added an assist, earning CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player honors. Her six goals were the most in a title game since 2014. Katie Walsh added a season-high five goals in the convincing victory.
Not to be outdone, the Stony Brook men’s team delivered a historic performance of its own. The Seawolves upset No. 16 Towson, 13-11, at Towson University to claim their first-ever CAA Championship. The victory secured the program’s fourth conference title overall and its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 14 years.
Goalkeeper Tommy Wilk was named Most Outstanding Player after making 17 saves and posting an impressive .607 save percentage. Justin Bonacci led the offense with three goals and an assist, while Carson Boyle, Jack Cavalieri, and Collin Williamson each added two goals.
The 11th-ranked women’s team earned the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host Stonehill Skyhawks in the opening round at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook will also host a matchup between Boston College Eagles and Yale Bulldogs, with winners advancing to the second round.
Meanwhile, the men’s team will take on Marist Red Foxes in the NCAA Tournament opening round, with a potential matchup against top-seeded Princeton Tigers awaiting.
It’s been a season to remember in Stony Brook, where both programs are proving that lacrosse excellence truly runs deep.
