Suffolk Community College Foundation continues scholarships for local Latino students
The Suffolk Community College Foundation has announced the continuation of two scholarship programs to support students in the Patchogue/Medford area, including those from Latino backgrounds. These scholarships aim to help students facing financial barriers as they pursue their education at Suffolk County Community College.

William Floyd High School honors ten seniors with AP Capstone distinction
Ten seniors from William Floyd High School have earned the AP Capstone distinction on their future high school diplomas based on their performance on AP exams through May 2024. To receive this designation, students must score a 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and a 3 or higher on four additional AP exams of their choosing.
Stony Brook University wins Car Free Day competition with record participation
Stony Brook University has been named the 2024 champion of the annual Car Free Day Long Island event. This international event, held every September, encourages people to travel without cars. This year, 892 members of the Stony Brook community pledged to forgo at least one car trip on September 22, opting instead for walking, biking, carpooling, using public transportation, or telecommuting. Their participation made Stony Brook University (SBU) the top performer among all participating Long Island organizations.

The university saw a 13% increase in first-year undergraduate student enrollment for the Fall 2024 term, with a total of 4,042 new students compared to 3,569 in Fall 2023. Additionally, there were 1,334 new transfer students in Fall 2024, marking a 4% increase from the previous fall.
PCORI funds $1M+ for developing predictive healthcare AI tools
The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has announced a $1.05 million award to Fusheng Wang, professor in the departments of Biomedical Informatics and Computer Science, and his team, including Richard Rosenthal, MD, professor and addiction psychiatrist from the Department of Psychiatry. Their research is focused on machine learning models to predict patient outcomes.
William Floyd School District announces policy on student information disclosure
The William Floyd School District has issued a notification regarding the release of student information under the No Child Left Behind Act. According to §9528 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (the “ESEA”) (20 U.S.C. §7908), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act, the district is required to disclose, upon request, the names, addresses, and telephone listings of high school students to military recruiters.

William Floyd's Zariel Macchia named among top cross-country runners by Newsday
Zariel Macchia, a senior on the William Floyd High School cross-country team, has been recognized as one of the top 25 girls’ cross-country runners by Newsday. The publication noted her impressive achievements: “She won the Federation title in 17:59.4 and finished second in Class A, and in the merge, in 17:44.3 at the public-school state championships. The BYU commit, who already has a Class A title to her name, is the fastest runner in the state…and one of the fastest girls in the country.”

Stony Brook researchers develop AI tool for improved breast cancer diagnosis
A team of researchers at Stony Brook University is developing a new method to analyze breast cancer imaging by incorporating mathematical modeling and deep learning. Led by Chao Chen, associate professor, and Prateek Prasanna, assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, the approach aims to improve disease diagnosis and create treatment plans specific to biomarker imaging and modeling findings.
