Eastport-South Manor junior Maddie Laezza made school history this past weekend, delivering a performance that will be remembered for years to come at the New York State Track and Field Championships.
Laezza captured not one, but two Class B state championships, winning both the 1,500-meter and 800-meter races against some of the top runners in New York State. With the victories, she became the first female state champion in Eastport-South Manor girls track and field history.
The accomplishment marks a major milestone for both Laezza and the Sharks program. Excelling in either event would have been impressive enough, but winning state titles in both races showcased her tremendous endurance, speed and determination on one of the sport's biggest stages.
Following her historic performance, Eastport-South Manor celebrated the achievement on social media.
"Great work, Maddie! We are so proud of you!" the district posted.
Laezza's success was part of a strong overall showing for Eastport-South Manor at the state meet.
Junior Matteo Monter also turned in an outstanding performance, placing second in the NYSPHSAA Class B discus championship. Monter recorded a throw of 170 feet, 4 inches, earning a spot on the podium and finishing among the state's elite throwers.
Meanwhile, teammate Timmy Dodd represented the Sharks in the distance events and delivered a strong effort in the 3,200-meter run. Dodd crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 9:31, competing against some of the top distance runners from across New York.
The performances highlighted the strength and depth of Eastport-South Manor's track and field program, with athletes excelling in sprinting, distance running and field events alike.
For Laezza, however, the weekend was truly historic. By becoming the first female state champion in program history, she has etched her name into the Eastport-South Manor record books and set a new standard for future generations of Sharks athletes.
