This past week, American Soccer Club New York hosted a special “Community Soccer Night” on Opening Night, May 2, as the Fighting Tomcats welcomed the New York Shockers. While the Tomcats came up short in the match, the evening was about much more than the final score.

The event highlighted the club’s commitment to building connections throughout Long Island, with a roster made up of local players who embody that sense of community. From the opening moments of the night, it was clear that this was a celebration of the game at every level.

“Community clubs are the foundation of the sport from Montauk to Manhattan,” said ASC New York Managing Partner and General Manager Jim Kilmeade. “The ASC New York Fighting Tomcats are committed to true grassroots development, and that starts in our local communities with young players of all abilities.”

One of the most memorable parts of the evening came before kickoff, when youth soccer players ages 10 and under were invited onto the field for a pregame parade. Representing their teams and clubs, the young athletes had the opportunity to walk onto the field in front of family and friends, creating a moment they are not likely to forget.

The experience continued as the players were welcomed into the “Team Tunnel,” where they met members of the Fighting Tomcats ahead of the opening ceremony. The interaction gave young fans a chance to connect directly with the athletes they look up to, further strengthening the bond between the club and the community.

Throughout the night, the atmosphere at the stadium reflected the spirit of togetherness that the event aimed to promote. Families filled the stands, youth players proudly wore their team colors, and the shared love of soccer brought everyone together.

The Fighting Tomcats will return home on Saturday, May 16, when they host AC Newport at LaValle Stadium on the campus of Stony Brook University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., and tickets are available through the American Soccer Club New York website.

As Opening Night showed, the Tomcats are focused on more than just results — they are building something meaningful within the community.
