A North Bellport man has been indicted in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian earlier this year, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced.

Andrew Holmes-Garriques, 27, was charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, along with driving while impaired by drugs and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Prosecutors allege that on Feb. 13 at approximately 1:15 a.m., Holmes-Garriques was driving a 2008 Mercedes-Benz eastbound on the South Service Road of Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore when he struck Korey Klein, 37, of Bellport, who was walking along the roadway.

Authorities said the impact scattered debris across the road, and Holmes-Garriques allegedly fled without stopping to render aid or report the crash.

“Driving is a privilege, not a right,” Tierney said.

“This defendant’s license to drive in New York State was allegedly suspended when he allegedly struck and killed Korey Klein.”

According to investigators, Holmes-Garriques returned to the scene hours later, at about 5:15 a.m., when a passenger in his vehicle called 911.

Emergency responders pronounced Klein dead at the scene.Police said Holmes-Garriques was found sitting in the driver’s seat and allegedly showed signs of impairment, including the odor of marijuana and poor performance on field sobriety tests.

He was arrested at the scene, and authorities later determined his license had been suspended.

Surveillance video obtained by investigators allegedly shows Holmes-Garriques driving the vehicle without damage prior to the crash and later operating it with a damaged headlight.

Holmes-Garriques was arraigned  before Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro, who set bail at $75,000 cash, $100,000 bond or a $500,000 partially secured bond.

He is scheduled to return to court June 1 and faces up to seven years in prison if convicted. The case is being prosecuted by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Vehicular Crimes Bureau.
