Andrew Salgado, a 14-year-old Miller Place resident injured in a March 24 crash on Route 25A, has died, Suffolk County police confirmed, as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. when, police said, Timothy McLaughlin, 58, of Sound Beach, was driving a Ford F-550 XL Super Duty westbound and moved into a turning lane to enter L Delea and Sons Sod Farms.
Police said Salgado was riding his bicycle eastbound along the shoulder when he struck the passenger side door of the truck during the maneuver.
After the impact, he was thrown from the bicycle and run over by the vehicle’s rear passenger side tires, authorities said.
Salgado was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition following the crash and later succumbed to his injuries, police said.
McLaughlin remained at the scene, was not injured and called 911 immediately after the incident, according to investigators.
The truck was inspected on site by Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety Section officers as part of the ongoing investigation.
Detectives from the Sixth Squad continue to examine the crash and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to come forward.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
