The Colonials Make a STATEment

The William Floyd Colonials girls' varsity basketball team is moving on in the New York state tournament after delivering a dominant performance in the quarterfinal round. The Colonials made a major opening statement by defeating the Corning-Painted Post Hawks 61–30 in the quarterfinals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Basketball Championships. The decisive victory showcased the depth and confidence that has defined William Floyd’s season, as the team controlled the pace from start to finish. By doubling up their opponent on the scoreboard, the Colonials sent a clear message to the rest of the state tournament field that they are a serious championship contender.

William Floyd entered the postseason after putting together an impressive regular season, finishing with a 19–5 overall record and a 13–3 mark in division play. Throughout the year, the Colonials showed flashes of dominance, including a nine-game winning streak that helped establish them as one of the top teams in their class. That momentum was on full display in the quarterfinal, where William Floyd executed on both ends of the floor. The Colonials pushed the tempo offensively while maintaining tight defensive pressure, forcing difficult shots and limiting Corning-Painted Post scoring opportunities throughout the contest. By halftime, William Floyd had already built a comfortable lead and never allowed the Hawks to threaten a comeback.

The standout performance of the night came from Milania Farrow, who delivered a career-high 30 points to lead all scorers. Farrow was particularly effective from beyond the three-point line, knocking down six shots from long range and energizing the Colonials’ offense each time Corning-Painted Post attempted to close the gap. Her perimeter shooting helped stretch the defense and created additional scoring space for her teammates. J. J. Stewart added 10 points, finishing second on the team in scoring and providing key baskets during several important stretches of the game. Gabrielle Bell-Eleazer, Chloe Campbell, and Taleah Coppola each contributed five points to the balanced effort, while Savannah Pantry and Jayla Thomas chipped in three points apiece to round out the scoring for William Floyd in the convincing victory. The offensive balance highlighted the team’s depth and chemistry.

With the victory, the Colonials now advance to the semifinal round of the NYSPHSAA Basketball Championships, moving one step closer to a state title. William Floyd is scheduled to face the Aquinas Institute of Rochester girls' basketball team on Thursday, March 19, at 2:30 p.m. at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York. Aquinas enters the matchup with a strong reputation, setting the stage for what could be one of the most competitive games of the tournament. The winner of the semifinal will earn a place in the New York State championship game, raising the stakes for both programs. If the Colonials continue to play with the same confidence, defensive intensity, and offensive rhythm they displayed in the quarterfinal, they will have a strong opportunity to keep their championship hopes alive and extend an already impressive postseason.
