The William Floyd Colonials boys basketball saw its season come to a close this weekend after a hard-fought battle in the NYSPHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament quarterfinals.

William Floyd dropped a 72-64 overtime decision to the Corning-Painted Post Hawks boys basketball in a game that remained intense from start to finish. Despite the disappointing result, the Colonials showed determination and resilience, pushing the contest beyond regulation before falling in the extra period.

JJ Smith led the Colonials with another standout performance. Smith scored 22 points while also contributing five rebounds and two assists, continuing the strong play that helped carry William Floyd deep into the postseason.

Sharod Sutton Jr. was close behind, finishing with 20 points, eight rebounds and three assists. His all-around effort helped keep the Colonials within striking distance throughout the tightly contested matchup.

Multi-sport standout Ja'Quan Thomas added 10 points to give William Floyd a third player in double figures. Jesse Durham contributed seven points and six rebounds, while Josiah Wade added four points. Evan Commodore rounded out the scoring with a free throw and grabbed three rebounds.

Although the Colonials fell short of advancing, the season marked a historic achievement for the program. The team reached the state tournament for the first time in school history, a milestone that highlighted the group’s dedication and teamwork throughout the year.

In a statement following the game, the William Floyd School District praised the team’s effort and accomplishments.

“They truly gave it their all and left it out on the court today,” the district said. “It was an amazing season and the team built memories that will last a lifetime. Congratulations to the coaches, student-athletes and their families on an amazing season and their first-ever appearance in the state championships.”

Despite the loss, the Colonials’ deep postseason run ensured that this season will be remembered as one of the most successful in program history.
