The William Floyd Colonials varsity flag football team continued its exciting postseason run this week with a thrilling 26-19 quarterfinal playoff victory over Walt Whitman in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final moments.

The Colonials wasted no time taking control of the matchup, and it was Vinte’ya Rountree leading the charge from the opening whistle. On William Floyd’s very first offensive play of the game, Rountree showcased her speed and athleticism by weaving through defenders on a long rushing touchdown to give the Colonials an early 6-0 lead.

Moments later, Rountree made another game-changing play on defense. She intercepted a pass and returned it for a pick-six before William Floyd successfully converted the extra point attempt to extend the first-quarter advantage to 13-0.

Walt Whitman answered later in the first half with a touchdown of its own, but the Colonials responded with another impressive drive. Facing a critical fourth-down situation, quarterback Isabella Quinones connected with London Barnes for a clutch touchdown pass that energized the home crowd and pushed the lead to 19-6.

The defense continued to come through in big moments as Savannah Pantry recorded an interception late in the second quarter to stop another Whitman scoring opportunity and send the Colonials into halftime with momentum firmly on their side.

Whitman refused to go away quietly, however, and mounted a comeback early in the third quarter with another touchdown to cut the deficit to one possession. Later in the quarter, the visitors threatened to tie the game before Mya Watkins delivered one of the biggest plays of the night with a crucial interception to halt the drive.

William Floyd capitalized immediately. Rountree found the end zone for the third time in the game and then connected with Savannah Pantry on the extra point conversion to give the Colonials a 26-12 cushion.

The drama continued in the fourth quarter as Whitman added another score and drove deep into Floyd territory looking for a game-tying touchdown in the final minutes. But once again, the Colonials defense delivered when it mattered most. London Barnes intercepted a pass with under two minutes remaining to seal the 26-19 victory.

The win marks the second consecutive season that Coach Ron Krawczyk and the Colonials have advanced to the Section XI semifinal round. William Floyd will now travel to face top-seeded Half Hollow Hills East with a trip to the championship game on the line.
