Experiencing a Diffferent Type of Pride

People often talk about the many moments that make them proud to be parents. It can be a child’s first steps, their first great report card, their first big hit in a baseball game, or any number of milestones along the way. For my wife and me, however, this past weekend brought a level of pride that few parents ever get the chance to experience.

Our first-born son, Tommy III, earned the opportunity to compete in the National Geography Bee, representing New York on a national stage. From the time he was young, we always knew Tommy was incredibly bright. Whether it was his strong grades, impressive IQ test results, or his placement in the Gates Program at school, he consistently showed a love for learning and an ability to excel academically.

Still, seeing him compete nationally was something entirely different.

What made the experience even more meaningful was not just the intelligence required to reach that level, but the way Tommy handled himself throughout the competition. The Geography Bee is no small event. The contestants take it extremely seriously, with many students arriving highly experienced and prepared with coaches and extensive training. The pressure in the room was intense.

As parents, we were on the edge of our seats for every single question, living and dying with each answer. Yet while our nerves were through the roof, Tommy remained calm, confident, and composed the entire time. He answered questions with poise, respect, and, most importantly, a smile on his face.

That is what made the moment so unforgettable.

Pride as a parent comes in many forms, but sometimes it goes beyond achievements and awards. Watching your child carry themselves with maturity, kindness, and grace under pressure creates a completely different kind of pride.

This weekend was not just about a national competition. It was about seeing our son represent himself, his family, and his state with class and confidence. It is an experience our family will never forget and one that filled us with pride in ways that go far beyond the obvious accomplishments.
