Unified Bowling Team Rolls into Third Season

The Smithtown Central School District has begun its third consecutive year of Unified Sports programming, continuing to expand opportunities for student-athletes across the district. This week, the district’s Unified Bowling team opened its season with a match against John Glenn High School at Lucky Strike Lanes.

What began as a small initiative has grown into one of the district’s most popular extracurricular programs. Participation has increased significantly thanks to the strong support from student volunteers in the Athletes Helping Athletes clubs, along with athletes participating through the FAST and Special Education programs at Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West.

Head coach Emily Fey said the team now carries a roster of 22 athletes, marking the highest participation total since the district launched its Unified program. The growth has brought not only more competitors but also a wave of new energy and enthusiasm to the team.

Unified Sports programs are designed to bring together students with and without intellectual disabilities, allowing them to compete side by side on the same team. The model promotes inclusion, teamwork and sportsmanship while creating meaningful experiences for everyone involved.

The district is also preparing to expand the program even further this spring. In late April, the district will launch its first Unified Basketball season, adding another opportunity for students to take part in the growing initiative.

District officials say the new program will allow even more students to participate in athletics while strengthening the sense of community throughout the schools. The addition of basketball will also help the Unified program reach more athletes than ever before.

The Unified League continues to demonstrate that athletics can bring students together in ways that extend far beyond the playing surface. The games remain competitive and energetic, but the emphasis on teamwork, encouragement and inclusion often leaves the biggest impression.

For many involved, the experience represents the best qualities of high school sports — competition, camaraderie and character — all on display at the same time.
