William Floyd Basketball Hosts Coach Sumpter Memorial Game

WF Basketball team | William Floyd School District

The William Floyd High School boys' basketball team, led by head coach Will Slinkosky, hosted its first annual Coach Darrell Sumpter Memorial Game in a matchup against Sachem North this week. Coach Sumpter was a beloved varsity assistant who tragically passed away last year at the age of 51. Known affectionately as Coach D, he brought enormous passion to the game and genuine care for the community’s youth, serving as a mentor within both the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs. He also helped establish the community’s youth basketball program and booster club.

As a tribute to Coach D, the Colonials left an empty seat on the bench, decorated with a memorial t-shirt, a clipboard, and a pack of Mamba candy he often gave players as a reward. Before the starting lineups, public address announcer Michael Feldstein delivered a heartfelt message honoring Coach D’s life and legacy, followed by a moment of silence. Inspired by his memory, the Colonials defeated Sachem North 63–51, earning their first win of the season.

The opening quarter was tightly contested, ending with a buzzer-beating three-pointer from senior Sharod Sutton to give William Floyd a 17–14 lead. From there, the Colonials controlled the game, outscoring Sachem North 20–5 in the second quarter to take a 37–19 halftime advantage and building a 27-point cushion by the end of the third. Seniors Jesse Durham and JJ Smith led the scoring with 12 points each, while Sutton added nine points on three shots from beyond the arc.

Between the meaningful pregame tribute, the strong team performance, and the support of friends and family, the night served as a fitting celebration of Coach D’s lasting impact.

The Colonials’ will next take on a dangerous Longwood team this week.

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
