Councilwoman Jane Bonner proudly participated in the Annual Polar Plunge at Cedar Beach this past Saturday, joining hundreds of supporters who braved the icy waters of the Long Island Sound to raise funds for Special Olympics New York. The event is held each year and invites participants to jump into the frigid water either as part of a team or individually, all to support athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Councilwoman Bonner once again plunged under the team name “Frozen Eagles,” raising an impressive $8,080 thanks to the generosity of her colleagues, local Brookhaven businesses, and friends. In total, more than $140,000 was raised. These donations will directly support Special Olympics New York, which provides year-round training and competition opportunities to thousands of athletes at no cost to them or their families.

“I am always inspired by the passion and resilience of Special Olympics athletes, and I am proud to be part of a community that shows up time and time again to support our neighbors. The kindness and generosity of our residents, businesses, and supporters ensure that these programs continue to change lives,” said Councilwoman Bonner.

The Polar Plunge is one of Special Olympics New York’s most popular fundraising events. While there is no minimum donation required to participate, plungers are encouraged to raise at least $25 to support the organization’s mission. Special Olympics New York relies entirely on donations to operate, supporting athletes with the help of more than 5,000 coaches and 4,300 volunteers statewide.

All proceeds from the Polar Plunge remain in New York, helping fund inclusive sports programming and competition opportunities that empower athletes of all abilities and strengthen communities across the state.

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
