At the New York State Championship Meet this week a number of Suffolk student athletes excelled in the girls gymnastics competition.

Newfield High School Senior Hannah Hughes not only defended her Vault Championship title for the 3rd time, but in doing so she made history. She put up an impressive 9.825 number. She also placed 4th on beam with a 9.75 and 3rd All-Around with a 38.1. Hannah will now go on to continue her gymnastics career at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh.

Smithtown East Junior Bayla Goldberg dominated on bars, taking home the Bar State Champion title with an impressive 9.775. This day was extra special because she was celebrating her birthday. Goldberg is a leap year baby and celebrated with a championship.

Her fellow Smithtown East teammates also had impressive days as East freshman Matt McDermott finished as the NYS runner up for 131 lbs and senior Dylan Reinard finished 5th at 116 lbs. Both of the athletes earned All-State honors.

Is There a New Ace in Town?

The New York Mets have a new ace, and fantasy owners have been accustomed to viewing Freddy Peralta as a near-ace for some time. The move to a more pitcher-friendly park should help, but do not overreach, because the reality is that the lineup around him is roughly the same and the bullpen is likely worse at protecting his leads. Peralta has been a standout for years, and slotting him in as a high-value fantasy arm is easy. The question is just how high he should go.
