Assemblyman Joe DeStefano praised the enduring legacy of American Legion William Merritt Hallock Post 155 as members celebrated the organization's 100th anniversary during a weekend ceremony honoring a century of service to veterans, families and the Lake Ronkonkoma community.
"Since their charter in 1926, our American Legion William Merritt Hallock Post 155 has been welcoming veterans from all branches of our Armed Forces; supporting veteran advocacy, youth programs, and other initiatives to help better the lives of our veterans and our communities," DeStefano said.
"Thank you to all the post leaders for inviting me to celebrate this milestone. Here's to many more years to American Legion Post 155 serving our veterans and communities."
The milestone reflects a history stretching back to the aftermath of World War I, when Army Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. helped establish the American Legion in 1919, encouraging returning servicemen to remain united through fellowship and public service.
Inspired by neighboring posts, Lake Ronkonkoma veterans organized their own chapter in 1926.
Members initially met in schools, firehouses and local businesses before purchasing land on Church Street in 1928.
They broke ground later that year, and the post's clubhouse welcomed its first meeting shortly before Memorial Day 1929. Over subsequent decades, the building expanded alongside the post's growing mission.
Today the post continues supporting scholarships, youth programs, veterans advocacy, Memorial Day observances, Veterans Day ceremonies, graves registration efforts and community service.
Its Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion remain active partners in that mission.
As members, families and neighbors celebrated the centennial, they honored not only the organization's past accomplishments but also its commitment to ensuring future generations of veterans receive fellowship, respect, support and a steadfast place to serve one another and their community for the next hundred years and beyond together with enduring pride.
