Heat Wave Broken By Violent Storms

Powerful thunderstorms brought an abrupt end to Long Island’s sweltering Fourth of July holiday weekend, leaving behind downed trees, widespread power outages and a continuing threat of flooding after days of record-challenging heat.

Storms started to roll across the region Saturday evening just as many Independence Day celebrations were wrapping up, unleashing wind gusts topping 70 mph in parts of eastern Suffolk County, along with torrential rain, hail and frequent lightning. Thousands of PSEG Long Island customers lost power as crews worked through the holiday weekend to restore service.

The severe weather followed several days of oppressive heat that sent temperatures soaring into the upper 90s, with heat index values exceeding 100 degrees across much of the area. New York officials had issued repeated warnings urging residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity and check on vulnerable neighbors as the dangerous holiday heat settled over the state.

As cleanup efforts continued Monday, forecasters warned that the weather was far from over. A flood watch remained in effect through early Tuesday, with an additional 2 to 3 inches of rain expected across Long Island and localized totals exceeding 4 inches where repeated thunderstorms develop. Meteorologists warned that rainfall rates could reach 2 inches per hour, creating the potential for flash flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.

The storm’s impact prompted local emergency declarations in Nassau and Suffolk counties, including Southampton Town and Southampton Village, where officials cited extensive storm damage and the continuing flood threat. Communities hit the hardest were Riverhead, Hampton Bays, Flanders, Baiting Hollow and Commack.

Emergency officials urged residents to avoid flooded roadways, stay away from downed power lines and monitor weather alerts as another round of heavy rain and thunderstorms threatened to prolong the hazardous conditions.

After enduring one of the hottest Fourth of July weekends in recent memory, Long Islanders now face a different challenge: recovering from a destructive storm while preparing for even more rain.
