America 250: Patriotic Package Powers Patriotism

Panico America 250 Care Package | Dan Panico

As communities across the nation commemorate America's 250th Anniversary, I wanted to celebrate this historic milestone by strengthening a connection that spans nearly 3,000 miles, from Brookhaven, New York, to Forks, Washington.

Recently, I sent a commemorative care package and personal letter to Forks Mayor Tim Fletcher and the members of the Forks City Council as a gesture of friendship and national unity during America's 250th Anniversary celebration.

This connection began last year when my family and I visited the Pacific Northwest. While in Forks, I had the opportunity to participate in, and win, the North Olympic Library System's inaugural Summer Chess Tournament. More importantly, I experienced firsthand the warmth, kindness, and hospitality of the people of Forks. The friendships I made and the welcoming spirit of the community left a lasting impression on me and inspired this cross-country exchange.

Although Brookhaven and Forks are separated by nearly 3,000 miles, I believe we are united by far more than geography can divide. Communities like ours share a commitment to public service, civic pride, and the enduring ideals that have defined America for 250 years.

To share a small piece of Brookhaven, I sent a care package featuring several hometown favorites and commemorative items, including Tend Coffee from Shirley, Blue Point Brewing Toasted Lager, Brookhaven commemorative challenge coins, Brookhaven pen sets, Brookhaven America 250 commemorative stickers, an official Town of Brookhaven flag, and Brookhaven America 250 T-shirts for Mayor Fletcher and each member of the Forks City Council.

My hope is that this package serves as a small token of friendship and appreciation while reminding all of us that, despite the distance between our communities, we remain connected by our shared history, our civic spirit, and our optimism for America's future.

America's 250th Anniversary is not just an opportunity to reflect on our nation's past—it is also a chance to celebrate the communities that continue to shape its future. Local governments are where democracy is experienced every day, and it is through the relationships we build with one another that our country grows stronger.

I am proud that the Town of Brookhaven is participating in the nationwide America 250 celebration, and I hope this simple gesture helps strengthen the bond between our two communities. From one coast to the other, we are reminded that the American story is written not only in our nation's history books, but also through the friendships, generosity, and shared values that unite communities across this remarkable country.
