Rocky Point High School's tennis program celebrated a historic achievement this season as Luke Mayola and Sena Donnelly capped off an outstanding year by competing at the New York State Tennis Championships in Flushing.
The freshman-sophomore doubles team etched its names into the school record books by becoming the first doubles team in Rocky Point history to qualify for and compete at the prestigious state tournament. Their remarkable season was filled with accomplishments and showcased the bright future of Rocky Point tennis.
Mayola and Donnelly established themselves as one of the top doubles teams in Suffolk County throughout the season. The talented duo captured the Conference III doubles championship, demonstrating consistency, teamwork, and determination against some of the area's best competition.
Their success continued into postseason play, where they earned a third-place finish at the Section XI Doubles Championships. That performance secured them a coveted berth in the New York State Tennis Championships and placed them among the elite players in New York.
By qualifying for the state tournament, Mayola and Donnelly earned recognition as one of the top 16 doubles teams in the entire state. Competing against New York's best players is an accomplishment few athletes achieve, making their run even more impressive considering their youth.
What makes the achievement particularly exciting for Rocky Point is that both players still have plenty of tennis ahead of them. As a freshman-sophomore pairing, Mayola and Donnelly have already reached a level of success that many programs spend years pursuing. Their experience at the state tournament will undoubtedly serve as a valuable building block for future seasons.
Beyond the wins and accolades, the duo's historic run brought pride and excitement to the Rocky Point community. Their hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship throughout the season helped elevate the program and inspire younger athletes who hope to follow in their footsteps.
Although their memorable season has come to an end, Mayola and Donnelly have already secured their place in Rocky Point tennis history. With a conference championship, a top-three Section XI finish, and a state tournament appearance, the future looks incredibly bright for this talented doubles team.
