Students Turn STEM into a Golf Adventure

Moriches Elementary Students | William Floyd School District

Learning came with a little extra fun at Moriches Elementary School recently as third-grade students combined science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to create their very own miniature golf course.

Working alongside STEM teacher Mrs. Nicolle Ranieri, students became "Putt-Putt Engineers" as they tackled a hands-on project that brought classroom lessons to life. The young engineers explored important STEM concepts such as force, motion, kinetic energy, and potential energy while designing and building unique golf holes complete with creative obstacles and challenges.

Using the engineering design process, each third-grade class worked together to develop four original miniature golf holes. Students brainstormed ideas, sketched detailed blueprints, built prototypes, tested their designs, and made improvements through multiple rounds of problem-solving and collaboration.

The project also introduced students to advanced technology. Through a partnership with school librarian Mr. Greg Amato, students learned how to use the 3D design platform Tinkercad to transform their ideas into digital models. Once their designs were complete, the students used 3D-printing technology to create targets, obstacles, and other course features that became part of their finished golf holes.

The exciting project culminated in a special outdoor community event where students had the opportunity to test out the course they created and enjoy the results of their hard work. Adding to the experience, members of the William Floyd High School boys varsity golf team attended the event along with their coach, Tom Short, who also teaches fourth grade at Moriches Elementary. The high school golfers offered tips, encouragement, and plenty of support as the younger students showcased their creations.

More than just a fun activity, the project gave students a valuable opportunity to apply classroom concepts in a real-world setting. Through creativity, teamwork, and innovation, Moriches Elementary's third graders gained hands-on experience in science, engineering, design, and technology while creating memories that are sure to last long after the final putt.
