Success in athletics is often measured by wins, championships, and individual accomplishments. However, one of the highest honors a student-athlete can receive is recognition for character, integrity, and respect for the game. This year, Sachem's Leonardo Villacreses earned exactly that distinction.

Villacreses was recently named the 2026 Section XI Sportsmanship Award winner for boys tennis, an honor that recognizes student-athletes who exemplify outstanding conduct, leadership, and respect both on and off the court.

Throughout the season, Villacreses demonstrated that excellence extends far beyond athletic ability. While his talent and competitive skills helped make him one of the area's standout tennis players, it was his patience, discipline, and sportsmanship that truly set him apart. Coaches, teammates, opponents, and officials alike witnessed a student-athlete who consistently represented the best values of high school athletics.

His exemplary conduct was especially evident during postseason competition. Villacreses proudly represented Section XI at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Competing on one of the sport's biggest stages, he showcased not only his tennis abilities but also the respect and professionalism that have become hallmarks of his game.

The Section XI Sportsmanship Award is one of the most meaningful honors presented each year because it celebrates qualities that leave a lasting impact long after scores and statistics are forgotten. Sportsmanship, integrity, humility, and respect are values that help define successful athletes and strong community members.

For Sachem, Villacreses served as an outstanding ambassador for the program throughout the season. Whether competing in a regular-season match or on the state championship stage, he represented his school with class and pride.

The recognition is a testament to the hard work, maturity, and character Villacreses displayed throughout his tennis career. His achievement serves as a reminder that true success in sports is measured not only by victories, but also by the way athletes conduct themselves while pursuing them.
