At this week’s Town Board meeting, Dan Panico joined Jane Bonner and the entire town board to recognize two outstanding local student-athletes for their remarkable accomplishments. Madison Grego of Mount Sinai High School and Yuuki Donnelly of Rocky Point High School were honored as recipients of the prestigious News 12 Scholar Athlete Award.
The award celebrates students who excel not only in athletics, but also in academics, leadership, and community involvement—qualities both honorees have demonstrated at an exceptional level.
Yuuki Donnelly was recognized for his achievements both in and out of the classroom. Maintaining an impressive 98 unweighted GPA, he has also made his mark as captain and MVP of his All-League tennis team. Beyond athletics, Yuuki has shown a passion for giving back, founding initiatives such as “Community Tennis Day” and “Harmony for Change.” He serves as student council vice president, volunteers as a music teacher, and has even performed as a concertmaster at Carnegie Hall, showcasing his talent and dedication to the arts.
Madison Grego was honored for her leadership and success as captain of Mount Sinai High School’s county and state championship cheerleading team. A two-time national finalist and Academic All-County honoree, Madison balances her athletic excellence with strong academic pursuits, maintaining a 95 unweighted GPA. She is actively involved in STEM and robotics studies and has conducted research at Brookhaven National Laboratory. In addition, she is a violist in her school’s chamber orchestra and an engaged community leader.
Supervisor Panico praised both students for their hard work and commitment, noting that their accomplishments reflect positively on the entire community. “Their hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence both academically and athletically make our community proud,” he said. “Congratulations to both of these remarkable students on this well-deserved recognition, and best wishes for continued success in the future.”
The recognition serves as a reminder of the incredible talent and leadership found within the local schools, as these students continue to set a high standard for their peers.
