Four seniors from the Sachem Central School District have earned prestigious recognition for their excellence both in and out of the classroom.
Recently, Hannah Barkin and Dominick Rienzi of Sachem East, along with Henry Sarro and Alyssa Tappin of Sachem North, were named Suffolk County Zone Award winners by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The honor celebrates students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, leadership, character, and overall wellness.
Zone Award recipients are selected based on their ability to maintain strong academic performance while contributing positively to their school communities. Each honoree exemplifies teamwork, responsibility, and sportsmanship, serving as role models for their peers.
“These students truly represent the best of Sachem,” said Gary Beutel, the district’s Director of Athletics, Health and Physical Education. “Their commitment to academics, leadership, character, and wellness reflects the values we strive to instill in all of our students.”
Each of the four students has built an impressive resume. Barkin, a standout volleyball player at Sachem East, is a four-year varsity athlete and member of multiple honor societies, ranking among the top students in her class. Rienzi, also from Sachem East, has been a leader in the soccer program, serving as a captain and earning recognition for his determination while maintaining Honor Roll status.
At Sachem North, Sarro has excelled in both lacrosse and football, earning All-County and All-State honors while serving as a team leader. Tappin has distinguished herself as a two-sport varsity athlete in volleyball and lacrosse, earning All-County recognition while also serving as Senior Class President and playing a major role in student media initiatives.
The NYSAHPERD Suffolk Zone Awards highlight students across the county who embody the organization’s mission of promoting healthy lifestyles and lifelong wellness. For Sachem, this recognition is another proud moment, showcasing student-athletes who continue to lead by example in every aspect of school life.
