Disc golf has officially arrived in Suffolk County, and local leaders are welcoming the new addition with enthusiasm.
This past week, Jim Mazzarella joined community members and organizers to celebrate the debut of a brand-new disc golf course at Southaven County Park. The opening marks an exciting step in expanding recreational opportunities across the county.
“It was an honor to help bring disc golf to Suffolk,” Mazzarella said. “Today it made its debut at Southaven County Park.”
Disc golf is an affordable and accessible activity that continues to grow in popularity. Often compared to traditional golf, the sport replaces clubs and balls with flying discs. Players throw from a tee area and aim for an elevated metal basket, completing each hole in as few throws as possible. The game offers a fun way to stay active while enjoying the natural surroundings of local parks.
Mazzarella also praised those who helped bring the project to life. “Congratulations to Long Island Disc Golf on the opening of this newest course, and a heartfelt thank you to the Suffolk County Parks Department for all their efforts in making it happen,” he said. “Special thanks to my Chief of Staff, Tim Rothang, for leading the charge in this exciting venture.”
The new course is now open to the public and does not require reservations, making it easy for residents of all ages and skill levels to give it a try. Whether you’re a seasoned player or completely new to the sport, the course provides a welcoming environment to learn and compete.
Organizers also shared that Long Island Disc Golf plans to offer free beginner lessons in the near future, helping introduce even more people to the game.
With its combination of outdoor recreation, accessibility, and community spirit, disc golf is poised to become a popular new attraction in Suffolk County.
