One Day In Medford

Plenty to do in Medford. | Photo image

As a Medford resident, I recently realized that everything I need is right here in my own neighborhood—no need to travel out of town. Here are just a few of the hidden gems in this beautiful hamlet.

I awoke one sunny morning and, using the clean and abundant bike lanes, rode my bicycle to the Medford Athletic Complex at 2151 Horseblock Rd. There was an opening to play pickleball, so I jumped in and played for about an hour with three other friendly Medford residents—free of charge. Afterwards, I walked the short distance to the beautifully manicured soccer field and did interval sprints on the soft grass for about 20 minutes.

I then pedaled over to the Longwood Library, located at 800 Middle Country Rd., Middle Island. While not exactly in Medford, it serves as the library for Medford residents. I enjoyed listening to a great band in the spacious community room—one of many free concerts offered throughout the year. I also spoke briefly with my two favorite librarians: Bridgett, who is as well-versed in Greek mythology as I am, and Carl, my go-to for all things exercise and weight training.

By this point, I was famished, so I headed to the Dairy Queen at 2846 Route 112, where I was greeted by my favorite DQ employee, Deanna. She is not only knowledgeable in all aspects of her work, but also extremely personable, always welcoming guests with a warm hello and a friendly smile. I ordered a value meal—chicken strips, fries, a soda, and a sundae—for an incredibly low price. Patty, one of the sister owners, greeted me, and we had a wonderful conversation.

Right next door is the Medford Branch of the Patchogue-Medford Library. I stepped into this “Little Library That Could” and made my way to the computer station, which has the most comfortable chairs I’ve ever sat in. I checked my email, read the newspaper, and spoke with librarian Christine, a fellow writer. We discussed poetry and short stories, and I checked out a book she recommended. I then headed over to Medford Memorial Park at 2215 Route 112 and sat on a bench reading.

Medford is vibrant, with many activities and places of interest. If you live here, take advantage of your hometown. If you don’t, make the trip—you’ll find plenty of hidden gems to enjoy.
