Jets Ace the Draft

There have not been many recent occasions when people could say the New York Jets did everything right, but after this year’s NFL Draft first round, that phrase is being used quite often. In fact, many analysts believe the Jets may have had one of the best opening rounds of any team in the league.

Holding two early selections, New York turned that opportunity into three first-round picks, a major boost for a roster looking to improve quickly. For a team with several needs, it was an aggressive and productive night that has many Gang Green fans excited.

The Jets began by selecting Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey with the second overall pick. Bailey was viewed by many as the “safe” selection, but that should not be mistaken for a low ceiling. He is considered one of the top pass rushers in college football from last season and projects as an immediate impact player. For a coaching staff that needs results right away, Bailey could not be a better fit.

New York finished last season with just 26 sacks, ranking near the bottom of the NFL. Bailey addresses that weakness immediately and could step into the lineup on Day One. His speed, strength, and ability to disrupt quarterbacks make him an early favorite in the Defensive Rookie of the Year conversation.

With the 16th overall pick, the Jets added another offensive weapon by selecting Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq. Many expected the team to target a wide receiver, but Sadiq’s talent was too difficult to pass up. Widely regarded as the top tight end in the draft, he brings value as both a blocker and receiver. Last season, he recorded 51 catches for 560 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Jets still managed to land a receiver later in the round, trading up to No. 30 to select Indiana wideout Omar Cooper Jr. New York sent pick No. 33 and a fifth-round selection to San Francisco to make the move. Cooper posted 69 receptions for 937 yards and 13 touchdowns last season as one of the most productive receivers in the nation. I wrote last week this would be their #16 overall pick.

Bailey strengthens the defense, Sadiq gives the offense a reliable target, and Cooper adds speed and playmaking ability. Altogether, the Jets addressed major needs and added impact talent across the board.

This was about as close to an A-grade first round as a team can have, and Jets fans have every reason to feel optimistic.
