When we previewed the Giants draft last week, many fans believed New York would come away with a wide receiver and a solid defensive player. Names such as Sonny Styles and Caleb Downs were frequently mentioned as possibilities. Instead, the Giants stayed true to a recent trend and once again invested in the pass rush.

With the fifth overall pick, New York selected Arvell Reese, an edge rusher from Ohio State. While the choice surprised some fans, Reese was widely viewed as one of the top prospects in the draft and a player with tremendous upside.

Reese became the third edge rusher selected by the Giants in the top five since general manager Joe Schoen took over in 2022. Though newer to the position, Reese has already shown elite athleticism, explosiveness, and the ability to pressure quarterbacks consistently. He is the type of versatile defender who can line up at outside linebacker or defensive end, giving the Giants flexibility across the front seven.

His skill set has drawn comparisons to Abdul Carter, another recent Giants first-round edge selection. Both players are known for speed, burst, and the ability to disrupt offenses in an instant. When paired with veteran standout Brian Burns, the Giants now have the makings of a dangerous pass-rushing unit that could cause problems for opposing quarterbacks all season long.

With their second first-round pick, the Giants turned their attention to protecting their franchise quarterback by selecting offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa from Miami. Mauigoa brings an impressive résumé to the NFL after earning consensus All-America honors and winning the ACC’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy, awarded to the conference’s top blocker. He was also named First Team All-ACC and helped anchor one of the nation’s most respected offensive lines.

Primarily a right tackle in college, Mauigoa has been praised for his durability, strength, and consistency. Those qualities should make him an immediate candidate to compete for playing time and strengthen the Giants’ offensive front.

All in all, New York ended the first round with exactly what every team hopes for — a potential game-changing defensive player and a high-level offensive lineman. They may not have been the names many mock drafts predicted, but the Giants addressed two major needs and added talent on both sides of the ball.

Now, Giants fans will wait to see if these selections can help turn draft-night promise into wins this fall.
