The Smithtown Central School District Board of Education recognized the achievements of several standout winter sports athletes and teams during its April 14 meeting, celebrating a season filled with championships, record-setting performances, and individual honors.
Jason Lambert, the district’s director of athletics, introduced the athletes and teams while sharing highlights of their accomplishments. Each recognition was met with thunderous applause from those in attendance, creating a proud and celebratory atmosphere.
Among the teams honored was the Smithtown High School West boys basketball team, which captured both the Suffolk County and Long Island championships during an outstanding season. Their success brought excitement and pride to the district community.
Also recognized was Sophia Alvarez of Smithtown High School East. Alvarez earned the Suffolk County Race Walk title and went on to claim a bronze medal at the New York State Championships, establishing herself among the top competitors in the state.
The Smithtown Central School District girls bowling team was honored after finishing second in Suffolk County while also completing its second consecutive undefeated regular season. The sustained success of the program has become one of the district’s proud traditions.
Trishna Desai was also recognized for an exceptional season in which she earned All-County, All-Long Island, and All-State honors.
On the wrestling mat, Matthew McDermott was celebrated for an elite season that included a Suffolk County championship, a runner-up finish at the New York State Championships, and a nationals finalist performance.
The Smithtown boys swim and diving team rounded out the honorees after runner-up finishes at both the Long Island Challenge and Suffolk County Championships. The team also earned All-American status in the 200-freestyle relay and set the fastest public-school time in New York State history.
The evening served as a reminder of the dedication, talent, and hard work displayed by Smithtown student-athletes throughout a remarkable winter season.
