The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats flag football team has made history in spectacular fashion. Not only are the Wildcats the new Suffolk County Class C Champions, but in their inaugural season they have also captured the Long Island Championship, establishing themselves as one of the top teams in New York State.
The Wildcats continued their dream season with a dominant 46-7 victory over Cold Spring Harbor in the Long Island Championship game. From the opening whistle, Shoreham-Wading River took control and never looked back, putting together one of its most impressive performances of the year on the biggest stage.
Leading the way was standout quarterback Shealyn Varbero, who delivered a remarkable performance. Varbero accounted for five touchdowns and 170 total yards while showcasing her playmaking ability on both sides of the ball. She threw three touchdown passes, added another score on defense, and helped power an explosive Wildcats offense that erupted for 27 points in the second quarter alone.
The championship victory is the latest milestone for a program that has exceeded every expectation in its very first season. Through determination, teamwork, and relentless effort, the Wildcats have quickly transformed from a new program into one of the premier flag football teams on Long Island.
School officials praised the team’s accomplishments and the support they received throughout the season.
“This incredible group of athletes didn’t just compete—they set the standard,” the school said. “Through hard work, relentless grit, and pure teamwork, they’ve written their names into the history books. A massive congratulations to the players, coaches, parents, and the entire Wildcats community who came out loud and proud all season long.”
The Wildcats now stand at 11-4 and have their sights set on an even bigger prize. Shoreham-Wading River will travel to Cortland High School on June 6 to compete in the New York State semifinals against either Westlake or Rhinebeck.
With a Suffolk County title, a Long Island championship, and a place in the state semifinals already secured, the Wildcats have turned their inaugural season into one of the most memorable campaigns in local sports history. Now, they are just two wins away from a state championship.
