Students from the Miller Place High School Sports Marketing and Sports History classes recently enjoyed a memorable educational experience at New York Islanders 2026 Sports Business Day.
The trip gave students an exciting opportunity to step outside the classroom and explore the real-world side of professional sports. Throughout the day, students participated in guided tours and interactive sessions led by members of the Islanders organization. The event offered a behind-the-scenes look at how one of the region’s most recognizable sports franchises operates on a daily basis.
Students met with staff members from several departments, including marketing, ticket sales, and game presentation. Each group shared valuable insight into the many moving parts that help create a successful fan experience both on and off the ice. From promoting the team to organizing in-game entertainment and connecting with supporters, students saw firsthand how business and sports are closely connected.
One of the highlights of the day was hearing directly from Islanders executives about their own professional journeys. Students learned how different career paths can lead into the sports industry and gained advice on what skills, experiences, and determination are needed to succeed in such a competitive field.
For students studying sports marketing and sports history, the visit brought classroom lessons to life. Concepts discussed in school were suddenly visible in action, helping students better understand how history, branding, fan engagement, and business strategy all come together in the modern sports world.
Experiences like Sports Business Day can leave a lasting impression, especially for students considering careers in athletics, business, media, or event management. Seeing professionals at work and learning directly from them provides inspiration that textbooks alone cannot always offer.
Miller Place students returned with new knowledge, fresh motivation, and a greater appreciation for everything that happens behind the scenes of a professional sports organization. It was an inspiring day of learning, discovery, and opportunity beyond the classroom walls.
