If a walk-off win was not special enough, Center Moriches Red Devils baseball also celebrated a major milestone this week during a dramatic victory filled with memorable moments.
David Spina delivered the biggest swing of the day—and perhaps one of the biggest swings of the season. With the game on the line in the bottom of the fifth inning, Spina launched a game-ending grand slam to give Center Moriches an unforgettable walk-off win. Few moments in baseball compare to a walk-off home run, and a grand slam only adds to the excitement.
Spina’s blast capped off a day that featured several milestone moments for the Red Devils. Alex Foster and Jack Cressy each hit the first varsity home runs of their careers, adding even more reason for celebration. For young players, first career home runs are memories that last a lifetime, and accomplishing them on the same day as a walk-off grand slam made the afternoon even more special.
While the offense supplied the fireworks, Danny Gilroy was outstanding on the mound. Gilroy threw another complete game and was dominant from start to finish. He allowed just one hit, did not issue a walk, and struck out eight batters in a commanding performance. His effort kept Center Moriches in control and set the stage for the late heroics.
The victory also carried extra meaning for the program’s leader. Head coach Paul Gibson III earned his 100th career varsity win at Center Moriches with the triumph. Reaching 100 wins is a significant achievement and a reflection of years of dedication, leadership, and success on the diamond.
Between milestone home runs, dominant pitching, a walk-off grand slam, and a coaching landmark, it was a day no one in Center Moriches baseball will soon forget. The Red Devils now hope the unforgettable win becomes the spark for even more success ahead.
