This week, Vidal Macchia of William Floyd Colonials made statewide news as the young standout continues to turn heads with an impressive high school career.
Macchia comes from strong athletic bloodlines, and sports fans in the community may already recognize the family name. His sister, Zariel Macchia, dominated headlines for years during her own decorated high school career. She has since continued her success at Brigham Young University and is widely considered an Olympic hopeful in track and field.
Now, it is Vidal who is stepping into the spotlight. The sophomore has quickly emerged as one of the area’s most promising young athletes and is already making a name for himself on the tennis court.
Though only in 10th grade, Macchia has opened the spring season with a strong 4-1 record, showing poise and talent well beyond his years. Standing 6-foot-1, the rising star has the size, athleticism, and skill set that has many believing this is only the beginning of what could be a special career.
His success this season has already earned him an opportunity on a bigger stage. Macchia is scheduled to compete at the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia this June, where many of the nation’s top young athletes will gather to showcase their talents.
For any high school athlete, qualifying for a national event is an accomplishment. For a sophomore, it is even more impressive and speaks to the level of potential Macchia possesses.
William Floyd has long been home to talented student-athletes, and Macchia appears to be the next in line to continue that tradition. With two more full high school seasons still ahead after this spring, the future looks bright for the Colonials standout.
As one Macchia sibling continues to chase dreams on the national and international stage, another is just beginning his own journey—and already making plenty of noise along the way.
