The Longwood Lions baseball team opened its season this year with a little something extra to inspire them every time they took the field. After the team lost their friend and teammate Nolan Horn in 2024, the program made sure his memory would remain a permanent part of the Lions family.
At the time of his passing, the team shared a heartfelt message that read, “Rest in peace, Nolan Horn. You are an inspiration to us all. We will be sure to keep your name and memory a part of our lives, both on and off the field.” That promise has clearly carried into this season.
Longwood’s field now features several tributes to Horn. His No. 3 is displayed proudly on the centerfield wall, while additional No. 3 signs have been permanently placed behind the batting cage and backstop. Every player, coach, and fan who steps onto the field is reminded of a teammate whose courage left a lasting impact on the community.
Horn battled brain cancer for two years and inspired countless people throughout that fight, especially those closest to him on the baseball team. His spirit has continued to shine throughout the school and surrounding neighborhood, where “Nolan Nation” clothing has become a common sight. With May recognized as Brain Cancer Awareness Month, the Lions also wore gray T-shirts to help bring attention to the cause.
While playing with heavy hearts and strong purpose, the Lions have also delivered the best start of any team in Suffolk County. Longwood has opened the season with a perfect 6-0 record, one of only four undefeated teams, and the only club sitting at 6-0.
The Lions have not just been winning—they have been dominant. Longwood has scored double-digit runs in all but one game and has piled up 55 total runs already this season. On the mound, the pitching staff has been equally impressive, allowing just five total runs through six games while recording three shutouts.
Longwood will play once this weekend before beginning a key three-game series against William Floyd Colonials, the club currently chasing them in the standings. With momentum building and Nolan Horn’s memory beside them, the Lions look ready for whatever comes next.
