The World Cup Won't Have Any Tailgating

Fans planning to attend matches at MetLife Stadium for the upcoming FIFA World Cup may want to rethink their usual game-day routine.

With the world’s biggest soccer event arriving in the New York-New Jersey area this summer, major changes are coming—not just on the field, but in the parking lots as well. In fact, fans will not be able to drive to the stadium for most matches in June and July, as traditional parking will not be available.

According to event organizers, the stadium—temporarily renamed NYNJ Stadium for the tournament—will operate as a “public transportation-first” venue. That means tailgating traditions, including barbecues and pregame gatherings in the parking lots, will not be part of the experience this time around.

“While rideshare and limited premium parking options will be available, the FIFA World Cup at NYNJ Stadium will largely rely on public transportation,” said Natalie Hamilton, a spokesperson for the host committee. Officials are strongly encouraging fans to use expanded service from NJ Transit, along with designated shuttle buses that will run to and from the stadium.

Parking lots at MetLife will instead be repurposed for fan engagement activities and enhanced security measures, significantly limiting available space for vehicles. As a result, only a small number of premium parking spots will be offered.

Some limited parking is available at the nearby American Dream Mall and in a designated lot for fans with mobility needs. However, those spaces come at a premium—priced around $225—and have already sold out for high-demand matches, including the July 19 final.

While the changes may take some getting used to, organizers say the goal is to create a smoother, safer and more efficient experience for the massive crowds expected.

For fans, the message is clear: plan ahead, take public transportation and arrive ready for a different kind of game-day atmosphere.
