The Wildcats Make History with First Ever Football Game

SWR Flag Football Team | Shoreham-Wading River Central School District

It was a historic and memorable day for the Shoreham-Wading River School District, as the Wildcats’ girls flag football team took the field for the first time in program history—and made an immediate statement with a dominant victory.

In their inaugural game, Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats Girls Flag Football rolled to a 52-20 win over the East Hampton Bonackers. The Wildcats wasted no time setting the tone, exploding for a 40-point lead in the first quarter and showcasing their talent on both sides of the ball.

Leading the charge was Mia Mangano, who delivered a remarkable all-around performance with more than 230 all-purpose yards. Mangano made history right away, scoring six touchdowns in a variety of ways. She caught two passes for 76 yards and two scores, rushed for 60 yards and two more touchdowns on just two carries, and added a defensive and special teams spark with an interception return and a punt return for scores. She also recorded two interceptions in the game.

Quarterback Shealyn Varbero was equally impressive, completing six of nine passes for just under 160 yards and three touchdowns. She also added a rushing score, showing her versatility in leading the offense.

On the ground, Brenna Molinelli powered the Wildcats with more than 140 rushing yards and a touchdown on just seven touches, while also contributing through the air. Ashley Morello hauled in a 50-yard touchdown on her lone reception, and Jillian Portuese added three catches for 35 yards. Additional contributions came from Alexa D'Andrea, Sophie McAlvin, Victoria Shields and Marisa Cacciola.

While the offense grabbed headlines, the Wildcats’ defense was just as dominant, recording six interceptions. Varbero, Casie Fioretti, D’Andrea and McAlvin each had one interception, while Mangano added two. Jenna Heins also contributed with the team’s lone sack.

For a program making its debut, Shoreham-Wading River exceeded expectations in every way. The Wildcats not only celebrated a milestone moment but also made it clear they are ready to compete in Suffolk County.

Next up, the Wildcats will look to build on their strong start when they take on Hauppauge Eagles in game two of their 12-game schedule.

Watch The Usage for Waiver Claims

After just one week of the baseball season, there’s no reason to panic. Sure, some of your stars may be hitting in the .100s and a few aces are carrying sky-high ERAs, but patience is a virtue over a 162-game schedule. Still, that doesn’t mean early trends should be ignored—especially when it comes to player usage.
