Everything Goes Right on Opening Day for WF

Opening Day is always a special moment in baseball, and this week, everything clicked for the William Floyd Colonials as they kicked off the 2026 season in dominant fashion.

The Colonials rolled to a convincing 10-0 victory over Walt Whitman Wildcats, showcasing a complete team effort on both sides of the ball. From the first pitch to the final out, William Floyd controlled the game and set the tone for what they hope will be a strong season ahead.

Leading the way was ace pitcher Jacob Cooke, who delivered an outstanding performance on the mound. Cooke allowed just two hits over five shutout innings, keeping Whitman’s hitters off balance all game long. He was nearly untouchable, striking out 11 of the 15 outs he recorded in a dominant display of pitching.

Offensively, the Colonials brought plenty of firepower. Kiernyn Mehmel, Gabe Beta, Andrew Marino and Spencer Link each turned in multi-hit performances, helping fuel the 10-run outburst. Contributions came from throughout the lineup, highlighting the team’s depth and ability to produce in key moments.

The Colonials were just as sharp defensively, making the routine plays and backing up their pitcher with solid glove work across the field. It all added up to a near-flawless opener and an ideal start to the season.

William Floyd will look to keep the momentum going as they continue their three-game series against Whitman. The Colonials will then face Patchogue-Medford Raiders and Longwood Lions in back-to-back three-game sets.

If Opening Day was any indication, the Colonials are ready to make some noise this spring.
