After capturing the Section XI Girls Indoor Track and Field Championships title in February, standout distance runner Maddie Laezza continued her impressive season on the state stage.

Laezza competed in both the 3,000-meter and 1,500-meter races at the NYSPHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which were held in early March at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.

On the opening day of competition, Laezza delivered a strong performance in the 3,000 meters, running a personal-best time of 9:38.91. The mark placed her fourth overall in a highly competitive field and earned her All-State and All-Federation honors. The race featured many of the top distance runners from across New York, making Laezza’s finish one of the most notable performances of the meet.

Laezza returned to the track on the second day to compete in the 1,500 meters and once again rose to the occasion. She posted another personal-best time of 4:35.80, an effort that helped her defeat six athletes who had entered the race ranked ahead of her.

The performance secured Laezza a second All-Federation medal during the championship meet and capped off an outstanding two days of competition against the state’s top runners.

Her back-to-back personal-best performances highlighted a season defined by steady improvement and strong finishes in high-pressure races. After already claiming a county championship earlier in the winter, Laezza’s results at the state meet further established her as one of the premier distance runners in Suffolk County.

Competing against elite athletes from across New York, Laezza demonstrated both endurance and determination on the state stage, turning in two of the fastest races of her career when it mattered most.
