The Smithtown West Bulls boys basketball captured their first-ever Long Island title Wednesday night, defeating the South Side Cyclones boys basketball 65–50 in the Class AA Long Island Class AA Championship at Farmingdale State College.
Smithtown West pulled away with a dominant fourth quarter, scoring 25 points to seal the victory and cap off a historic night for the program.
“This game was the perfect testament to who we are,” Bulls head coach Mike Agostino said after the game. “We played hard, we moved the ball and we were there for each other.”
Senior standout Michael Cascione led the way with a game-high 30 points. The performance carried even more meaning as the championship fell on Cascione’s 18th birthday.
“It doesn’t get better than this,” Cascione said. “This is the best day of my life.”
His brother, Jax Cascione, added 12 points to provide additional scoring support. Tim Bannell finished with 11 points, while Evan Lutzer chipped in five. Casey Burton added four points and Luke Brown rounded out the scoring with three.
The Bulls earned their trip to the Long Island championship after winning the Suffolk County Class AA Championship last Saturday with a victory over the Half Hollow Hills West Colts boys basketball.
With the Long Island crown secured, Smithtown West now advances to the next round of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball Tournament.
The Bulls will carry a 22-game winning streak into the regional round when they face the Rye Garnets boys basketball of NYSPHSAA Section 1 in a matchup scheduled to be played in Yorktown.
For Smithtown West, the historic victory marks another milestone in what has already been a remarkable season.
