Big Honors for Stony Brook Women's Hoops Player

Zaida Gonzalez | Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University's Zaida Gonzalez has been named Division I Women’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.

Gonzalez is playing guard for the Seawolves this year, and was also named the Coastal Athletic Association player of the week.

She was absolutely on fire this week averaging 26.5 points per game on 44.2% shooting on 43 shots.

She also added seven rebounds to complete the stat sheet and lead the Seawolves to a 2-0 weekend at home in CAA play.

Those wins also pushed Stony Brook over the .500 mark on the season with an 8-7 record.

Stony Brook recently defeated William & Mary 66-48. Then they came back to beat Charleston 87-83 in overtime.

Gonzalez had 16 points with four rebounds in the victory over William & Mary, then had a career-high and program-record 37 points along with a team-high ten rebounds for her first career double-double as Stony Brook overcame an eleven-point deficit to defeat Charleston.

This will go down as one of the best games a player has ever had in the school's history.

Gonzalez, whose points total set a single-game record for the school in its Division I era, scored 27 of her 37 points in the fourth quarter and overtime when she completely took over the game.

She added to the history-making day by going the length of the floor for the game-tying basket with one second left in regulation to send the game into OT.

This is the first MBWA weekly honor for Gonzalez.
