A Hauppauge man was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated following a fatal crash in Saint James, Suffolk County Police said.
The collision occurred at at the intersection of Route 347 and Alexander Avenue.
Police said Matthew Smith, 20, was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado northbound on Alexander Avenue when he failed to stop at a red light. The pickup truck then struck a 2019 Alfa Romeo traveling westbound on Route 347.
The driver of the Alfa Romeo, identified as Patricia Espinosa, 42, was seriously injured in the crash. She was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Smith and his passenger, John Andali, 25, of Centereach, were also taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. Police said both sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Smith was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated, according to authorities.
Both vehicles involved in the crash were impounded for further investigation. Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
