John Melandro, a teacher at Tangier Smith Elementary School in Mastic Beach, New York, has been honored with the Milken Educator Award. This prestigious national award, often called the "Oscar of Teaching," acknowledges educators who demonstrate excellence in their field. Alongside this recognition, Melandro received an unrestricted $25,000 cash prize.

"John Melandro’s commitment to education is evident in every aspect of his classroom," stated Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards and a 1994 Milken Educator from Indiana. She praised his enthusiasm for leadership at the school and his efforts to enhance character education and involve families in students' educational journeys. Foley noted that it is no surprise Melandro is known as the 'Magic Man.'

Melandro holds a Master’s degree from Stony Brook University and is currently enrolled in its Educational Leadership program. He credits faculty members like Alan Baum and Ken Forman for shaping him into the leader he is today. "I am humbled to be selected as the only New York teacher this year to receive the Milken Educator Award, after only seven years of teaching," said Melandro.

As the first recipient from the William Floyd School District, Melandro focuses on critical thinking, project-based learning, and culturally responsive education. His innovative teaching methods have resulted in high student performance and a classroom environment where every student feels valued.

New York State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa congratulated Melandro on receiving the award. "Through his innovative teaching practices, he inspires students and colleagues alike, elevating the entire William Floyd School District community," she said.

Coming from a family of educators, Melandro uses creative approaches to make everyday subjects engaging for students. Besides his classroom work, he serves as a mentor and leader in programs like Character Education.

Melandro will join other distinguished educators at the Milken Educator Awards Forum in Los Angeles this April to collaborate with fellow awardees and education leaders.

The Milken Educator Award was established by Lowell Milken through the Milken Family Foundation in 1987 to honor exceptional educators early or mid-career for their achievements and potential future contributions.

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
