The Tri-Hamlet 250 Committee is organizing a public event on February 22, 2026, at the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library to discuss "The Life of William Floyd." The discussion will be led by Ron Gross, an alumnus of William Floyd High School, retired history teacher, and current second vice president of New York State United Teachers. The event aims to encourage attendees to reflect on the question: "Would you sign?" in reference to the decision made by William Floyd and other founding fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence.

William Floyd was one of 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence and is recognized as a founding father. The committee notes that he risked severe consequences, including public execution for high treason, in order to help establish the United States.

"Our community and school district are privileged to share a deep connection with William Floyd, one of our nation’s founding fathers. His role in signing the Declaration of Independence was marked by extraordinary courage – as he risked everything including the threat of public execution for high treason – to help establish the path that led to the nation we know today. Mr. Floyd joined 55 other brave souls in taking this historic step, demonstrating a commitment that continues to inspire us today."

"You are cordially invited to join us on Sunday, February 22, at the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library from 1 pm to 4 pm for a celebration honoring William Floyd. The event, 'The Life of William Floyd' will encourage attendees to reflect on the question, 'Would you sign?' as they consider the risks and courage involved in the founding of our country. New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) 2nd Vice President, retired William Floyd teacher, and William Floyd High School alumnus Ron Gross will be among those leading the discussion and sharing insights on William Floyd's lasting influence."
