Ryszard Murawski, a 44-year-old resident of Lindenhurst, New York, has been sentenced to 22 years to life in prison for the murder of his wife, Wioleta Murawski. The sentence was handed down following his guilty plea to Murder in the Second Degree.
Bellport woman pleads guilty in hit-and-run case involving firefighter
Maria Guallpa-Bonilla, a 36-year-old resident of Bellport, has pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a fatal crash that occurred on June 10, 2024. The incident resulted in the death of Christopher Hlavaty, a 22-year-old volunteer firefighter from East Patchogue.

Islip Terrace man receives 25-year sentence for manslaughter
Eduardo Vega, a 58-year-old resident of Islip Terrace, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of his son-in-law, Roshane McLaren. The incident occurred at their shared home in Islip Terrace. Vega pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree last month.
Researchers develop framework for scalable distributed quantum computers
Researchers from 14 institutions have collaborated to tackle one of the significant challenges in quantum computing: scaling. Through the Co-design Center for Quantum Advantage (C2QA), a Department of Energy National Quantum Information Science Research Center, they developed the ARQUIN framework. This initiative aims to simulate large-scale distributed quantum computers by organizing them into different layers. Their findings were published in ACM Transactions on Quantum Computing.

Staten Island Resident Alleges UPS Discriminates Against Non-White Apartment Complexes
A class action lawsuit was filed on October 8, 2024, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, in which Gordon Flowers accuses United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) of racial discrimination. The complaint alleges that UPS has systematically refused to deliver packages directly to two predominantly non-White apartment complexes on Staten Island—Fox Hill Apartments and Park Hill Apartments—requiring residents to travel to retrieve their deliveries.
Plaintiffs accuse United States Postal Service of Wrongful Death
On Oct. 4, the Wendler Family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York against the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the death of Antares Wendler-Phillips. The plaintiffs allege that Antares's death was the result of workplace harassment and negligence.

Tracy Bott has filed a class action lawsuit against Hatch Baby in New York federal court over alleged deceptive marketing practices concerning their sound machines' safety risks due to faulty power adapters causing electric shocks. The suit seeks over $5 million in damages for affected consumers.
Students Go Bionic
Prodell sixth graders had the opportunity to work with The Bionic Project on the theme "we are all connected; community is essential." The full day program began with an assembly on topics such as inclusive behavior and language, accessible school and stadium design, media narratives around disabilities and assistive technology. The day continued with adaptive sports clinics led by the four instructors, two of whom are elite athletes with physical disabilities. By the end of the day, students were better able to understand the challenges that students with physical disabilities face, particularly when it comes to playing a sport or participating in physical activities that may seem easy or come naturally to others. However, they were also able to see the power of resilience and hard work.
