The William Floyd Colonials girls’ varsity tennis team has finished its regular season with a 13-3 record, securing a spot in the playoffs for the 23rd consecutive year. The team, coached by Dave Pia, who is a two-time USTA Coach of the Year and a member of the William Floyd Athletic Hall of Fame, earned the No. 6 seed and will have a first-round bye. Their next match is scheduled against No. 11 Half Hollow Hills West on Thursday, October 16 at 2 pm.

Coach Pia credited the team's performance to strong singles and doubles play throughout the season. He highlighted junior Lydia Van Cott for her singles achievements and junior Gianna Martin for her role in doubles: "Junior Lydia Van Cott led the way with outstanding singles play and big match wins throughout the season. Junior Gianna Martin anchored the doubles play with outstanding net play that led to big wins all season."

Senior Corrine Neidig and sophomore Rylie Wiegand completed an undefeated run at second doubles. Juniors Tatiana Sanchez and sophomore Khloe DiMaio also played key roles in contributing to the team's success.

First-year varsity players Ava Asendorf (freshman), Karin Da Gama Paes (junior), Katelynn DeLuca (junior), Genesis Canas (junior), Alexandra Dorost (junior), Emma Drees (sophomore), Emma Hodgson (sophomore), and Gabriella Montalbano (freshman) made contributions during the season as well. Anabel Van Cott returned from injury late in the season to help secure victories.

Three players—Lydia Van Cott, Gianna Martin, and Anabel Van Cott—received All-County honors. Tatiana Sanchez, Corinne Neidig, Rylie Wiegand, and Khloe DiMaio were named All-Division players.

In postseason tournaments, Lydia Van Cott and Anabel Van Cott finished second in Division Doubles while Gianna Martin placed fourth overall in Singles.

Coach Pia said: "Congratulations to the Colonials and good luck in the county team playoffs!"

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
