Sachem alumni deliver commencement addresses to inspire graduating class of 2026

Patricia Trombetta, Superintendent at Sachem Central School District | Sachem Central School District

Two Sachem alumni returned to their alma mater on June 27 to address the graduating Class of 2026 at the district's commencement ceremonies. Kristen Shanahan, a Sachem East Class of 2020 graduate, spoke at Sachem East, while Stephanie Lydecker, a media executive and Sachem North Class of 1990 alumna, addressed graduates at Sachem North.

Both speakers emphasized that success is achieved through perseverance, surrounding oneself with supportive people, and maintaining belief in one's ability to overcome challenges. Shanahan shared her experiences from her collegiate lacrosse career. After excelling at Sachem East, she faced significant injuries during her time at the University of Notre Dame before transferring to the University of Maryland. There she had a breakout season and contributed to a national championship win for the Terrapins.

Shanahan told graduates about the importance of belief and encouraged them to trust themselves even when facing adversity. At Sachem North, Lydecker focused her speech on "finding the right crew." Drawing from decades in media and entertainment leadership roles, Lydecker said that while talent and ambition are important factors in success, it is ultimately determined by those you choose as teammates and mentors.

Lydecker used stories from her professional life to encourage students to seek out collaborators who challenge them and bring out their best qualities. Both speakers highlighted how different paths can emerge from similar beginnings in Sachem classrooms.

The ceremonies brought together thousands of graduates, families, and faculty members, who were reminded that values learned within the district continue long after graduation day. The event concluded with both alumni demonstrating how resilience and support networks can help turn aspirations into reality.
